Statement_February 14, 2021

We, Responding: International Performance Art Festival and Meeting, stand with people of Myanmar and their right for democracy. Responding is an initiative that consists of artists and researchers from across the globe. We respond to various social and environmental issues via performance art, related researches, and productive discussions. We shed light on issues that are not necessarily circulated on mainstream media. We stand with the philosophy of diversity and that includes rights of minorities and socially vulnerable people. Hence, we agree and join the coalition as in the statement as below.

THE PETITION and CALL for ACTION

A Call for International Coalition for The People of Myanmar. We are artists, activists, social workers, and collectives from around the world, and we stand with The People of Myanmar and their rights for democracy. Please join us by signing this petition, by doing any actions with arts such as painting, performance, installation, photography, graphic, poster, etc and by uploading them in the social media platforms. We will thus grow as a coalition, calling for an end to this oppression. Their democratically elected leaders including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, other senior government officials, and the elected members of parliament have now been detained by the military. They need urgent concrete actions and interventions to stop this aggressive coup, to protect The People of Myanmar and the democratically elected National League for Democracy Government. Join The People of Myanmar’s demand for their immediate releases by their  peaceful demonstration. Their democratic freedom shall never be interrupted or prevented with violence. In solidarity, we are all closely observing the current situation in Myanmar. We demand for the safety and right of democracy for our Burmese friends.

Responding: at the COVID-19 pandemic

Responding: International Performance Art Festival and Meeting is a new challenge that seeks to “respond” to social issues and problems through performance art and thus facilitating critical dialogue between art and society. The current social issues are, at the very least, the recent pandemic and the accompanying economic crisis, which is common to all human beings regardless of country or region. Performance art must undoubtedly “respond” to this challenge. R3: Scape-City had selected two activity bases, Singapore and Suwa, both in the West Pacific region where the effects of the pandemic are miraculously mitigated. One is the world’s financial and innovation center, a young megacity with a population of 5.6 million, and another is a group of small cities with a population of 200,000 that have maintained a festive performance throughout the 30,000-year history in the geographical center of Japan. One is a base for transmitting modern art movements such as TAV (The Artists Village), and another is a base for concentrating animistic art from Jomon (Neolithic culture) art to Yutaka Matsuzawa’s conceptual art. Our aim is to connect these two extremely contrasting bases and develop mutual “responses” through research, creation, and performance of artists and communities, thereby creating a milestone for the after-corona true multicultural society.

Performance at Distance

The global spread of COVID-19 has made transnational mobility difficult, and communication has compelled to have physical distance. It has become challenging to share performances in the same space and to achieve the festivity that emerges from the specific sites. Following these situations, R3: Scape-City uses the online platform to explore the possibilities of performance art as an experimental venue for new performative communication that is neither live performance nor video art.

The artists, who will take part in the R3: Scape-City in the town of Shimo-Suwa, Nagano prefecture next year, will produce a performance for online in a way that is currently possible for them, depending on the situation they are in. Responding to the conditions we are now facing, we aim to promote interactive communication through online performative practices that connects directly local and local globally as well as to bridge between this particular time and the actual performance festival next year.

Discursive Arena

"RESPONDING"to the works in Performance at Distance, we commission researchers, critics,  curators and artists from contemporary art world and beyond for writing contributions in our experimental platform: Discursive Arena where we analyze and understand  each work and think of new possibilities in  performance art, and also hope to raise various discussions of relevant present tense issues and interests. It will be further extended by responses by the visitors on the comment sections in each contributors' pages.
